WATERLOO - The Rev. Lawrence D. Garland, 77, of Waterloo, died Monday, June 2, 2014, at Covenant Medical Center.

He was born April 28, 1937, in Waterloo, son of Arnold and Dorothy Smith Garland. He married Mary Freeland on June 28, 1958, at Union Gospel Church, Waterloo.

Lawrence was employed with John Deere for 37 years. He then entered full-time ministry serving at First Baptist Church in Peoria, Ill., Yeddo Baptist Church in Kingman, Ind., and First Baptist Church in Loup City, Neb. He most recently was a part-time chaplain at Bickford Cottage, Cedar Falls.

Survived by: his wife; three daughters, Kelly (Darrin) Hagedorn, Suzanne (Eric) Merchant and Dianne (Bill) Maravetz, all of Waterloo; five grandchildren, Ashley (Wesley) Peterson, Dustin Merchant, Abigail Merchant, Alex Maravetz and Emily Maravetz; a great-granddaughter, Emma Peterson; and a sister, Joan Granger of Waterloo.

Preceded in death by two brothers, Emery and Harold Garland; and two sisters, Marian Hansen and Jean Sternat.

Services: 10:30 a.m. Friday at Hagerman Baptist Church, with burial in Garden of Memories Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday at Hagarty-Waychoff-Grarup Funeral Service on West Ridgeway. Visitation also for an hour before services Friday at the church.

Memorials may be directed to Burton Avenue Baptist Church or the family.
