WATERLOO - Robert E. Hayes, 93, formerly of Waterloo, died Tuesday, Sept. 6, 2005, at the Western Home Communities, Cedar Falls, of natural causes.

He was born March 28, 1912, in Jesup, son of Arista and Cora Metcalf Hayes. He married Madeline G. Pint on Jan. 11, 1934, in Jesup. She died Oct. 11, 2004.

Mr. Hayes was employed as a carpenter for several contractors for many years and worked for the city of Waterloo Parks Department, where he helped build the gazebo in Washington Park. He retired in 1977.

Survivors include two sons, Robert E. Jr. (Nancy) of Cedar Falls and David L. (Patti) of Grand Rapids, Mich.; three daughters, Barbara L. Hayes of Fort Collins, Colo., Judy K. OConnor of Waterloo and Holly M. (Nick) Haaf of Southlake, Texas; 21 grandchildren, 38 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren; and a sister, Gertrude Koster of Urbandale.

Preceded in death by a daughter, Kathleen A. Meinders; and three sisters, Grace J. Dennis, Mary Jensen and an infant.

Services: 11 a.m. Friday at St. Edward Catholic Church, with burial in Mount Olivet Cemetery. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Hagarty-Waychoff-Grarup Funeral Service on West Ridgeway, where there will be a 4 p.m. Catholic Order of Foresters rosary and a 7 p.m. vigil service. Visitation also for half an hour before services Friday at the church.

Memorials may be directed to Cedar Valley Hospice.
