CEDAR FALLS - William Dwight “Bill” Pitcher, 74, of Cedar Falls, died Wednesday, May 21, 2014, at the Muse-Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City.

Per William’s request, cremation has been accorded and a private family celebration of his life will be held at a later date.

The family would like to suggest that those wishing to give a memorial in his memory may direct memorial contributions to Hospice of North Iowa.

Hogan-Bremer-Moore Colonial Chapel, 126 3rd Street NE, Mason City, is in charge of the arrangements.

William Dwight “Bill” Pitcher was born on Dec. 4, 1939, in Bismarck, N.D., the son of Merritt D. and E. Pauline (Powell) Pitcher. Bill graduated from Grundy Center Community High School in 1959, where he participated in track and football, and was on the third team All-State Football team. Bill was inducted into the U.S. Army on Sept. 10, 1959, at Fort Des Moines, serving his country honorably and faithfully with the 82nd Airborne Division at Fort Bragg, N.C., and also spent 10 months in Germany during the Berlin Crisis, before being honorably discharged on Sept. 12, 1962.

During his working career, Bill worked for 25 years as a lathe operator for Viking Pump (now IDEX) in Cedar Falls until his retirement.

Bill enjoyed reading history and military books, ham radio operator, NASCAR racing, and was an avid Chicago Cubs and Detroit Tigers fan. He was a member of Masonic Lodge No. 334 in Grundy Center, and a third degree Mason.

Those left to cherish his memory are his daughter, Julianne Pitcher of Owosso, Mich.; his brother, David Merritt (Kathy) Pitcher of Mason City; his sister, Mary Elizabeth (Edward) Brown of Washington, Iowa; as well as extended family members and friends.

Bill was preceded in death by his parents; and a son, David Patrick Pitcher.
