WATERLOO - Kate Thorpe, 72, of Waterloo, formerly of Des Moines, died Tuesday, May 13, 2014, at Cedar Valley Hospice Home.

She was born July 1, 1941, in Des Moines, daughter of Allan and Vivian Norris Denny. She was married and later divorced.

Kate graduated from Des Moines Roosevelt High School in 1959 and Iowa State University in 1963. She was a member of First Congregational United Church of Christ, where she taught Sunday School; was past president of Junior League; past board president of Cedar Valley Hospice; past chair of Cedar Aids Support System; past board member of Grace House; and was active in educational organizations. She also was a member of Iowa State University Alumni Association, Gamma Phi Beta and PEO.

Survived by two daughters, Lynn Fiorendino of Columbia Heights, Minn., and Laura (Joel) Meyers of Reinbeck; a son, Stephen (Rebecca) of Vicenza, Italy; seven grandchildren, Lilli (Bryant) Medhus, Andy and Pete Meyers, Ben Fiorendino, and Christian, Logan and Madoc Thorpe; a sister, Nancy (Andrew) Carlson of San Francisco; and a brother, Thomas (Patrice) Denny of Ocean Springs, Miss.

Preceded in death by her parents.

Memorial services: 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at First Congregational United Church of Christ, Waterloo, with inurnment in Glendale Cemetery, Des Moines, at a later date. Locke Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Memorials may be directed to Cedar Valley Hospice, the church, or Iowa Department for the Blind

Kate was an accomplished Bridge player throughout her life.
