WATERLOO - Gordon C. "Gordy" Richards, 83, formerly of Waterloo, died Sunday, April 3, 2005, at the Denver Sunset Home, Denver, of natural causes.

He was born Dec. 23, 1921, in Nashua, son of George C. and Jessie Marie Peterson Richards. He married Lucille Schofield on Dec. 5, 1946, at Waterloo First United Methodist Church.

Mr. Richards was a 1939 graduate of Waterloo East High School. He worked for the Waterloo Police Department for 30 years, part of that time as a detective, retiring as captain in 1977. He then was a Black Hawk County magistrate judge for 13 years, retiring in 1991. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps in the Pacific during World War II and was past president of the Iowa State Police Association.

Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Barbara (Claude) Tavernier of Albany, Ore., and Sue (Jerry) Guenther of Denver; four grandchildren and six great-grandsons; a brother, Clyde (Elinor) of Ames; and a sister, Norma (Jim) Crisman of Dallas, Texas.

Preceded in death by a son, Michael.

Services: 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Locke Funeral Home, with burial in Waterloo Cemetery. Military rites will be conducted by Waterloo American Legion Post 138 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1623. Friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Memorial fund will be established.
