GILBERTVILLE - Cletus F. Thome, 79, of Gilbertville, formerly of Jesup, died at home Monday, April 17, 2006.

He was born Sept. 2, 1926, in Jesup, son of John and Cecilia Kass Thome. He married Irene Dietsch on Feb. 8, 1949, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Waterloo.

Mr. Thome farmed near Jesup, retiring to Gilbertville in 1991. He also was employed at Purolator Courier Corp. and had served during World War II in the U.S. Army. He was a member of the 3rd and 4th Degree Knights of Columbus, 700 Council and Hennessey Assembly; the Nugent-Demuth American Legion Post 714; and was a life-time member of the Disabled American Veterans.

Survivors include his wife of Cedar Falls Lutheran Home; a daughter, Shelly (Dale) Gronoski of Raymond; two sons, Steve (Cris) of Jesup and Jeff (Nancy) of Gilbertville; nine grandchildren, Dale J. (Kari) Gronoski, Dayna (Dave) Adams, Erin Thome, Nick Thome, Julie (Dayton) Ericson, John Thome, Neal Thome, Lindsey Thome and Luke Thome; two great-granddaughters, Brianna Gronoski and Aubrey Gronoski; a brother, Roman (Vicki) of Gilbertville; and two sisters, Leona Bernard of Gilbertville and Rita Weiden of Raymond.

Preceded in death by two brothers, Jerome in infancy, and Ralph; and three sisters, Aurelia Freet, Reginia Weber and Celine Berns.

Services: 10:30 a.m. Friday at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, with burial in St. Mary's Cemetery, both in Gilbertville. Military rites will be conducted by Nugent-Demuth American Legion Post 714 of Gilbertville. Public visitation from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Hagarty-Waychoff-Grarup Funeral Service on South Street, Waterloo, with a 3rd & 4th Degree Knights of Columbus rosary at 7 p.m., and from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday with a 7 p.m. vigil service. Visitation also an hour before services Friday at the church.

Memorials may be directed to the church.
