Francis A. “Kappie” Kapler, 94, of Waterloo, passed away on April 30, 2014, at Charlotte Hall Veterans Home in Maryland.

He was born on Feb. 9, 1920 in Cresco to Adolph Kapler and Kathryn (Ferrie) Kapler.

Kappie grew up loving to fly and became a B-17 pilot in the Army Air Corps during World War II. A survivor of a crash landing in the North Sea, Kappie earned his membership in the Goldfish Club.

After the war he started a small business in the restaurant industry in Waterloo and also played a prominent role in the Iowa Restaurant Association.

Once retired, Kappie could often be found helping with tours at the Waterloo airport that reunited other WWII veterans with various aircraft of the era.

Kappie is survived by his sister Zinetta Eckerman and brother Norbert Kapler; daughters, Janis Kapler, Deb Kapler, Karen Kapler, and Lynn Lamers; his son-in-law Richard Lamers, as well as two grandchildren, Joshua and Cara Lamers.

Arrangements are being handled by Brinsfield-Echols Funeral Home, P.A., 30195 Three Notch Road, Charlotte Hall, MD 20622. A Committal Service with Military Honors will be held at Arlington National Cemetery at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in his memory may be made to Charlotte Hall Veterans Home, 29449 Charlotte Hall Road, Charlotte Hall, MD 20622.
