DUNKERTON - An off-duty reserve police officer has died of injuries in a head-on collision with a cargo truck Monday morning.

Daniel Conger, 39, a Dunkerton resident, was flown to University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City following the 7:27 a.m. accident.

He died later in the day, said Black Hawk County sheriff's deputies who investigated the accident.

Conger worked at the John Deere foundry in Waterloo during the day and was a reserve officer for the Cedar Falls Police Department.

"He worked a lot of third shifts and was very close to several of our third-shift officers," said Police Chief Rick Ahlstrom this morning. "He was steady, very reliable … and we're going to miss him."

The other driver, James DeLong, 61 and of Dunkerton, was taken to Allen Hospital in Waterloo with what has been described by authorities as minor injuries.

Officers are still investigating the accident.

Deputies said DeLong, who was driving a truck owned by a local farm co-op, was westbound in the 8000 block of East Dunkerton Road when Conger, driving a pickup truck, crossed the center line.

Deputies with the sheriff's office haven't determined why Conger crossed the center line. The two likely possibilities are that he became distracted while driving or that he fell asleep behind the wheel, said Investigator Steve Petersen.

After the impact, DeLong's truck rolled on its side, and rescue workers had to cut off the pickup's roof to free Conger.

Conger was taken to Allen Hospital for emergency surgery and then flown to Iowa City.

Conger started volunteering for the Cedar Falls reserve force in April 2001, because he had friends in law enforcement and he wanted to help his community.

"I think this is something that was natural for him," said Lt. Jeff Sitzmann who coordinates the Cedar Falls reserve officer program.

"I think it was service oriented. He wanted to give to the community, and this was his opportunity to do so," Sitzmann said.

He is survived by a wife, Joan, and three children.
