WATERLOO - Charles E. "Chuck" Walter, 76, of 8454 Fox Hills Road, Agency, died peacefully at 7:10 a.m. June 4, 2005, at his home.

He was born Sept. 5, 1928, in Agency, to Clovie and Alta Elliott Walter. He married Mary Ann Byrne. They divorced. Charles married Alyce M. Hayden (Lewis) on March 3, 1972.

Charles served in the U.S. Army from March 1951 to September 1953, and completed five years of reserve duty. Charles was a machinist for John Deere at the Waterloo Works from 1959-1990. Chuck and Alyce made their home in Waterloo from 1972-1990. When he retired in 1990, they wintered in Texas and made their home in Agency, which is where he grew up. He loved his winters in Texas and made many friends. In the summer he planted huge gardens and enjoyed canning and giving his vegetables to family and friends. He enjoyed cooking and baking and was truly a gourmet chef with several specialties. He enjoyed visits to the children and grandchildrens homes and spending time at his home in Agency with them. He cherished the summers Seth was able to stay with him and summer visits from all the grandchildren.

Charles restored a 1942B John Deere tractor with the help of his neighbor, as well as his sons and grandsons. The tractor is in mint condition. He also enjoyed going with Bryan and Cassie to Chases tractor pulling events. Chase was Chucks little buddy. He loved spending time and visiting with brothers, sisters, nieces, nephews and other family members and friends.

Chuck was an avid NASCAR fan with #9 as his favorite. He enjoyed golfing with the John Deere league at home as well as in Texas.

He loved engaging in political discussions. Chuck was a friend to everyone. He was a devoted husband, father, grandparent, brother and uncle. He was proud of his children and grandchildrens accomplishments. Chuck knew his strength came from the Lord and turned to Him often in the quiet of the day. He confirmed that with baptism.

Surviving are his wife, Alyce; seven children, Joenna "Jo" K. Walter of Clarksville, Angella M. Petersen of Dayton, Ohio, Charles "Chuck" E. Walter Jr. of Lake Havasu City, Ariz., Rebecca A. Hickman of Brecksville, Ohio, Curtis "Curt" L. Walter of Waterloo, Randall M. and Russell M. Walter, both of West Des Moines. Charles has 15 grandchildren, Lindsay, Kyle, Seth, Carrie, Nick, Nicole, Niel, Matthew, Heidi, Callie, Austin, Evan, Chelsey, Cody and Caleb; two great-grandchildren, Autumn and Trinity; and one to be born in September.
