EVANSDALE - Albert August Oleson, son of August and Lena (Huber) Oleson, died March 15, 2009, at Allen Hospital, Waterloo, of natural causes. He was born on Dec. 3, 1909, in Janesville, and grew up in the Plainfield and Nashua area. He married Annabelle Brogue on May 17, 1945, in Waterloo. In 1942, Albert volunteered to serve in the Navy during World War II on the USS CK Bronson and was later awarded a medal for assisting with the rescue of former President George H.W. Bush from the Pacific Ocean. Albert and Annabelle enjoyed attending annual Navy reunions all over the country until just a few years ago.

Albert was a longtime member of the Home Builder's Association, Waterloo-Cedar Falls Board of Realtors, American Legion and Antique Automobile Clubs of America in Waterloo, Cedar Rapids and Des Moines. Albert and Annabelle were very active in the annual Antique Car Club Tours, Good Sam's Club, 1918 Club, and Giessen Sister City in Germany, traveling to Germany three times and hosting their counterparts in Waterloo.

Albert was a member of the Oleson Family band that played at nursing homes in the NE Iowa area and enjoyed playing his button accordion and harmonica. Albert and Annabelle owned and operated Oleson Homebuilders and Oleson Realty for decades. He was quite the handyman, refurbishing many homes in the area. His true passion was refurbishing antique cars and riding with his grandchildren in parades. He loved tinkering in his workshop in Waterloo and fishing with his grandchildren.

His brothers, Andrew, Harold, Carl and Robert; and sisters, Marie Fritcher, Grace Woodman and Freda Stalheim, preceded him in death.

Albert is survived by his wife and three children, Larry (Pat) Oleson of Spirit Lake, Janee (Phil) Oleson Root Hoff of Waterloo and Bette (George) Infeld of New Hampton. He is survived by five grandchildren, Bill (Ann) Ruzicka of Owatonna, Minn., Elizabeth (Quincy) McKinney of Columbia, Mo., Craig (Kelly) Root of Woodbury, Minn., Jon (Rachael) Root of Ellenton, Fla., and Mary Ann Infeld of New Hampton; and seven great-grandchildren. Albert is also survived by three sisters, Gertrude Nelson of Phoenix, Janet (Dwight) Barnhart of Greene and Ardith Goings of Nashua and numerous nieces and nephews.

Public visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday, March 19, at Parrot & Wood Funeral Home, located at 965 Home Plaza. Funeral services will be held at First United Methodist Church, Waterloo, at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, March 20, with interment following in Garden of Memories on Highway 63 north in Waterloo. Military rites will be conducted at the cemetery by the Evansdale AMVETS Post 31 and Waterloo AMVETS Post 19. Memorials may be directed to Habitat for Humanity in lieu of flowers.
