EVANSDALE - John H. "Bert" McConeghey, 86, of Evansdale, died Thursday, May 1, 2014, at Covenant Medical Center.

He was born June 17, 1927, in Newton, son of Herbert W. and Nell Doerfler McConeghey. He married Virgene Claire Oldson on Nov. 6, 1948, at St. John's Lutheran Church in Des Moines; she died Sept. 21, 2013.

He graduated from Jesup High School and attended the University of Northern Iowa. He served in the U. S. Coast Guard Merchant Marines during World War II. John retired from John Deere Waterloo Works as a supervisor in 1983. He was a member of St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church where he was a former president of the congregation and treasurer.

Survived by a daughter, Kathleen Covington of Waterloo; a son, Danny of Evansdale; a grandson, Matthew Covington; a brother, Howard of Albuquerque, N.M.; and a sister, Ruth Mahon of Virginia.

Preceded in death by three brothers, Wayne, Gerald "Buck" and Harold; and a sister, Mary Alice Lockard.

Services: 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church, Evansdale, with burial in Fairview Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at Locke Funeral Home, Waterloo.
