WATERLOO - Lloyd Mennenga, 89, of Galena, Ohio, formerly of Waterloo, died Saturday, April 26, 2014, at Kobacker House.

He was born Nov. 3, 1924, in Grundy Center, son of Kobus and Effie Agy Mennenga. He married Arletta M. Brunson on June 4, 1949, in Waterloo. She died July 15, 1997.

He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, serving on the USS Sandoval during the battles at Iwo Jima and Okinawa. Lloyd worked as a foreman with Iowa Public Service Co. and was a member of the IBEW.

Survived by a daughter, Sherrie (Dale) Bender of Galena, Ohio; two sons, Greg (Sausan) of Powell, Tenn., and Tim of Charles City; five grandchildren, Sarah Sullivan and Mark Mennenga, Brett, Eric and Christa Bender; two great-grandchildren, Hunter and Izzy; two brothers, Elmer of Clarksville and Lawrence of Waterloo; and a sister, LaVonne (Bob) Hamer of Cedar Falls.

Preceded in death by a brother, Harvey.

Graveside services: noon Wednesday at Mount Olivet Cemetery in Waterloo, with full military rites by Waterloo AMVETS Post 19 and Evansdale AMVETS Post 31, assisted by the U.S. Navy Honor Guard. Services celebrating his life were held at 10 a.m. May 2 at the Rural Chapel United Methodist Church, Galena. Hagarty-Waychoff-Grarup Funeral Service on South Street is assisting the family.

Memorials may be directed to the church or Council for Older Adults, 800 Cheshire Road, Delaware, Ohio 43015.

With an adventurous spirit, Lloyd enjoyed traveling, with trips to the casino and dog tracks. An outdoorsman at heart he had a passion for fishing and camping. Family gatherings, picnics, and hog roasts were always special events. Humble at heart and at times stubborn, he was headstrong in his beliefs, but sweet and fun loving and well-liked by all.
