James Millard Dickinson was born on July 31, 1923, in Waterloo, Iowa. His parents were Emory E. and LaTosca M. (Pugh) Dickinson, both deceased. James worked for the John Deere Tractor Company after graduating from West Waterloo High School. At age 18, he joined the U.S. Marine Corps and was deployed in the Pacific Theater and China for the duration of World War II.

After leaving the service, he went to Iowa State University where he received his Ph.D. in metallurgy in 1953. While still a student, he married Ada Holmes and had three daughters. The family moved to New Mexico and he began his career as a research scientist and group leader at the Los Alamos National Laboratory, where he worked until his retirement in 1986.

James was always fond of the outdoors and enjoyed hiking, hunting and fishing; he even tied his own flies for fishing. He was also an avid dancer and popular square dance caller. Jewelry making and photography were among his other interests, as was working with stained glass.

After retirement, he divided his time between residing in Mesa, Ariz., and traveling, primarily going on cruises and caravanning in the United States and abroad. He achieved his goal of visiting all seven continents. Eventually, he settled in Ocean Shores, Wash., where he passed away on Jan. 25, 2006, due to Interstitial Pulmonary Fibrosis.

Donations in his memory may be made to the American Lung Association.

His survivors include his wife, Ada; his daughters, Judy Dickinson de Salomon (Jorge), Patsy Dickinson (Greg Anderson) and Bobbi Craig (Charles); sister-in-law, Cora Mae Herron; seven grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

His brothers Jesse and John predeceased him.

Memorial services were held in the Ocean Shores Elks Club and interment was in the Tahoma National Cemetery in Kent, Washington.
