LA PORTE CITY - Lucille Pauline Smith, 99, of La Porte City, formerly of Waverly and Plainfield, died Thursday, April 24, 2014, at La Porte City Nursing & Rehab Center of natural causes.

She was born March 21, 1915, in Butler County, daughter of Henry and Anna (Heine) Hirsch. She married Bernard Smith Sr. on Dec. 7, 1932, at Peace United Church of Christ, Clarksville. He preceded her in death.

Lucille attended the Maple Grove Country School near Horton. Following school she helped her parents at home. In 1941, the couple moved to Cedar Falls until 1945, when they moved to Bernard’s parent’s farm in Horton where they had a milk route. In May of 1999, Lucille made her home at the Eichhorn Haus, Waverly, and became a resident of the LaPorte City Nursing & Rehab in 2010. She was a member of Peace United Church of Christ, Clarksville.

Survived by a son, Bernard L. (Evenlyn) Smith Jr. of Waverly; a daughter, Nancy Liebsch of Washburn; a daughter-in-law, Joyce Smith of Pine River, Minn.; 14 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; and 20 great-great-grandchildren.

Preceded in death by her parents, Henry and Anna; a son, Floyd; a grandson; nine brothers; and five sisters.

Services: 1:30 p.m. Monday at Kaiser-Corson Funeral Home, Waverly, with burial in Oak Hill Cemetery, Nashua. Visitation from 3 to 4:30 p.m. today and for an hour before services, both at the funeral home.

Memorials may be directed to Care Initiative Hospice in Cedar Falls.
