WATERLOO - Donald Edward Abel, 76, of Waterloo, died Wednesday, April 16, 2014, at Covenant Medical Center.

He was born April 5, 1938, in South Bend, Ind., son of Edward and Helen Rozycki Abel. He married Linda Reed on Aug. 30, 1963, in South Bend.

A veteran of the U.S. Air Force, Donald was employed for many years in industrial manufacturing, including ownership in Royal Machine Foundries, Davenport. He retired from International Harvester, Caterpillar, and most recently from GMT in Waverly. He was a member of St. Edward Catholic Church and the Waterloo/Cedar Falls Stamp Club.

Survived by his wife; three sons, Stephen (Beth) Hodges of Tallahassee, Fla., John (Cathy) Abel of Harrison, Ark., and Michael (Tassy Brown) Abel of Le Claire; three daughters, Susan (Daniel) Spradling of Hillsborough, Calif., Julia (Todd) Hart of Kohler, Wis., and Elizabeth (Roy) Vachon of Jacksonville, Fla.; 12 grandchildren; two brothers, Tom of Le Claire and Bruce (Sandra) of Ashland, Ky.; and three sisters, Arlene (Al) Hutson of Fort Worth, Texas, and Cynthia Gardini and Mary Kay (Sonny) Ridenour, both of South Bend.

Preceded in death by a daughter, Michelle Abel; an infant son, Robert Abel; and a brother-in-law, Silvio Gardini.

Services: 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. Edward Catholic Church, with burial in Mount Olivet Cemetery. Visitation from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday at Hagarty-Waychoff-Grarup Funeral Service on West Ridgeway, with a 7 p.m. vigil service. Visitation also an hour before services Tuesday at the church.

Don was interested in restoring old cars for many years. He loved his dogs and birds and was an avid gardener. He loved to tutor children at St. Edward School where he supported the staff in many functions.
