LA PORTE CITY - Sharon Kay Powell, 70, of La Porte City, died at home Friday, April 18, 2014, of breast cancer.

She was born Dec. 28, 1943, in Waterloo, daughter of James and Betty Friedly Barman. She married David E. Powell on June 16, 1962, at Prince of Peace Lutheran Church, Evansdale.

Sharon graduated from Waterloo East High School in 1962 and was a homemaker.

Survived by her husband; five sons, David (Lori) of rural Mount Auburn, Dan (Virginia) of Andrew, Duane (Lesa) and Dana, both of La Porte City, and Derek (Carrie) of Center Point; 10 grandchildren, Ashley, Dallas, Damon, Darian, Dylyn, Dayton, Daelyn, Dacey, Dominick and Duncan; three sisters, Gail Ginther of Seattle, Cathy (Bill) Burke of Hudson and Janice Barman of Loveland, Colo.; and two brothers, Jim (Suzy) Barman of La Porte City and Richard Barman of Loveland.

Preceded in death by her parents; and a brother, Jerry Barman.

Services: 11 a.m. Friday at American Lutheran Church, La Porte City, followed by cremation with private family inurnment in West View Cemetery, La Porte City. Visitation from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday at La Porte City Funeral Home, and an hour before services Friday at the church.

Sharon provided homecare for each of her grandchildren from infancy to school age. Sharon treasured time spent with her family at their cabin on the river near Guttenberg and enjoyed attending school events that involved her grandchildren.
