ELK RUN HEIGHTS - Velma M. Nichols, 72, of Elk Run Heights, died Sunday, April 6, 2014, at Covenant Medical Center, Waterloo, of complications of COPD and Broken Heart Syndrome.

She was born Oct. 23, 1941, in Waterloo, daughter of Merle Clarence and Eva Violet Johnston Scobee. She married Dale R. Nichols on July 1, 1960, at Burton Avenue Baptist Church, Waterloo; he died March 15, 2014.

Velma attended Waterloo East High School. She had formerly worked at the A&W Drive Inn in Evansdale, the Y Grill in Waterloo and Evansdale Pharmacy. She was a member of Burton Avenue Baptist Church.

Survived by a daughter, Terri Derifield of Elk Run Heights; six grandchildren, Tim (Cori) Derifield of Missouri, Daniel Derifield of Greene, Dana Graveman, and Tina, Diana and David Derifield, all of Waterloo; three great-grandchildren, Sadie Derifield, Loralie and Lincoln Graveman; two sisters, Sharon (Wallace “Butch”) Johnson of Washburn and Beverly Tweedt of Urbandale; and a sister-in-law, Sandra Scobee of Cedar Falls.

Preceded in death by her parents; and three brothers, Wayne Robert, Joseph “Paul” and Larry Dean Scobee.

Services: 10:30 a.m. Friday at Burton Avenue Baptist Church, with burial in Garden of Memories Cemetery, both in Waterloo. Visitation from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday at Kearns Funeral Service Kimball Chapel, Waterloo, and an hour before services Friday at the church.

Memorials may be directed to the family.

Velma enjoyed being a homemaker and raising her family. She liked cooking, organizing and was fond of drawing. Velma loved to spend time with her family, especially her grandchildren.
