WATERLOO – Nico Henry DeJong, 84, of Waterloo, died Wednesday, March 19, 2014, at Covenant Medical Center.

He was born Dec. 28, 1929, in Numansdorp, Holland, son of Jan and Lyns DeJong. In 1958 he married Mary Jane Rush from Elkhart, Ind.

Nico was 11 years old when World War II began. He graduated from Agricultural Technical School in Holland. He immigrated to the United States in 1952, being sponsored as a farmhand in Hubbard, Neb. During the Korean Conflict Nico was drafted; at this time he became a proud U.S. citizen. During 1953-54 he served in the U.S. Army. After being honorably discharged he attended Purdue University, graduating in agricultural engineering.

Nico worked for John Deere from 1959-1984 in Holland, Iran, Turkey, England, Denver, Colo., Moline, Ill., and lastly at the Product Engineering Center, Waterloo, in the area of competitive product information.

He loved the Chevrolet Corvair and was actively involved in the Corvair Society of America. He loved his Savior Jesus Christ and was dedicated to many church activities and Bible studies. He was an active member in the Cedar Falls VFW, the CB Emergency Club, and the area Cat Club.

He is survived by his son, John of Kennewick, Wash.; his sisters, Lyny (Bert) Pheyffer of Oregon and Leny of Holland; and brother Jan of Holland.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife.

Public visitation will be from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday at Hagarty-Waychoff-Grarup Funeral Service on West Ridgeway, where there will be a 2:30 p.m. service of remembrance. Burial will be 10 a.m. Monday at Cedar Valley Memorial Gardens Cemetery, Cedar Falls, where military rites will be conducted by the Iowa Army Honor Guard.
