WATERLOO - Sterling B. Nelson, 64, of Des Moines, formerly of Waterloo, died Tuesday, Aug. 16, 2005, at Taylor House Hospice, Des Moines, of a malignant brain tumor.

He was born March 9, 1941, in Waterloo, son of Everett and Melba Card Nelson. He graduated from East High School in Waterloo; the University of Northern Iowa with a B.A. in math education; Northeastern University in Illinois with a masters degree in math education; and completed a graduate course at Multnomah School of the Bible in Portland, Ore. He was a junior high math teacher and taught during most of his career for Lombard Junior High School, Lombard, Ill.

He moved to Des Moines in 1989 and currently lived at Valley View Village. He was a member of Miller United Methodist Church, the Valley View Singers, the musical group Spring Rain (formerly Oasis), and led a low vision support group at Valley View Village. He touched many lives with his singing and cornet playing and was known for his exceptional memory.

Survived by his wife, LaDonna Nelson; his mother, Melba Nelson of Des Moines; a sister, Sylvia (Chris) Christiansen of Des Moines; two nephews, Curtis (Lynette) Christiansen of Des Moines and Keith (Jane) Christiansen of Bondurant; four grand-nephews; and numerous relatives by marriage.

Preceded in death by his father.

Services were Saturday at Miller United Methodist Church, Des Moines, with burial in Hayes Township Cemetery, near Arthur. Grandview Park Funeral Home, Des Moines, was in charge of arrangements.

Memorials may be directed to the church or the American Diabetes Association.
