Gerald "Jerry" Leo VanDorn, 71, of Waterloo died Tuesday July 1, 2008, at home of natural causes.

He was born January 3, 1937, in Waverly, the son of Lyle and Dorothy Holland VanDorn. He married JoAnn Bohnsack on Oct. 5, 1963, at St. Johns Catholic Church in Waterloo.

Mr. VanDorn was a firefighter with the Waterloo Fire Department for 34 years retiring on July 4, 1992. He served in the United States Marine Corps as a Corporal.

Survivors include his wife of Waterloo; a son Jeffrey (Amy Runnebaum) of Wichita, KS; four daughters: Christine (Jim) Bailey of Gilbertville, Cynthia (Tom) Scheid of Port Washington, WI, Cheryl (Sam) Kuhn of Lansing, and Sandra "Scooby" (Brian) Carroll of Maxwell; 9 grandchildren; two sisters, Rita (Kenny) Trost of Waterloo and Phyllis (Tom) Hausladen of Indiana; three brothers: Edward "Pete" (Marisa) VanDorn, Joseph "Pat" (Wanda) VanDorn all of Waterloo, and Timothy "Skinny" (Genny) VanDorn of Cedar Falls.

Preceded in death by his parents, a daughter Marie VanDorn, a granddaughter Emily Bailey, two brothers, Richard and John VanDorn, a sister Sheila Francis.

Services: 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church Gilbertville with burial in Mt. Olivet Cemetery Waterloo. Full military rites will be conducted at the cemetery by Waterloo AMVETS Post 19 and Evansdale AMVETS Post 31. Public visitation from 4-8 p.m. Thursday at Hagarty-Waychoff-Grarup Funeral Service on South St. where there will be a 4 p.m. rosary and 7 p.m. vigil service. Visitation also one hour prior to services Saturday at the church.

Memorials may be directed to Cedar Valley Hospice or IC/St. Joseph School.
