Death of An Old Resident

B. D. Hayes, a well-known resident of Waterloo, died at 4:30 yesterday afternoon at his residence, No. 300 East Eleventh Street, after an illness which has covered a period of about sixteen months.

Mr. Hayes was born Feb. 20, 1833, in West Granby, Conn. He came to Clinton, Iowa, in 1855, and to Waterloo in 1858. He remained here about two years and then returned to Connecticut in 1860. In 1862 he came to Waterloo again, but stayed only a few months and then went back to Connecticut where be remained until 1869, after which he returned to Waterloo and has made his home here ever since.

In 1855 he was married to Elizabeth C. Cooley, sister of James L. Cooley, of this city, and she together with four children survive him. A son, Fred Hayes, and one daughter, Mrs. Sprague, are married, while two other daughters who are unmarried, are at home.

Mr, Hayes was a carriage trimmer by trade, but he lived for several years on a farm in Poyner township. He was a quiet and unassuming man, but was thoroughly posted on the events of the day and took great interest in matters of public concern. He was well known to all as a man of strict integrity and he had the respect and esteem of all who knew him. He was a member of the Masonic fraternity, holding his membership in St. Mark's Lodge, No. 26, of West Granby, his native town.

The funeral will be held at the residence, No. 306 East Eleventh street, at 10:00 a.m. tomorrow. Members of the Masonic fraternity and all friends are invited to be present.

The illness which terminated fatally and which continued for about sixteen months, was caused by a cancer of the intestines. As a result of this growth, he suffered intensely much of the time.

In health he was robust and of muscular build, weighing over 200 pounds, but sickness and suffering reduced him to an emaciated skeleton. In spite, of the pain which he endured, he bore his sickness without complaint and passed away calmly to a better country where suffering is unknown.

An examination, conducted by the physicians this morning, revealed the fact of a cancer near the junction of the small and large intestines. The growth covered a space of three to four inches in diameter and it was a hard cancerous substance with numerous adhesions. The physicians stated that it was almost a marvel that he lived as long as he did and he must have been possessed of indomitable will power to have withstood the severe pain which he suffered.
