[Waterloo Daily Courier, Thursday, October 20, 1904, Waterloo, Iowa]

Mrs. Ben Hayes, Residing Here Thirty-Five Years, Dies This Morning.

Mrs. Benjamin Hayes, one of the oldest settlers in this section, passed away this morning at her home on Independence Avenue, after having been suffering for some time with an internal trouble. She had lived in Waterloo nearly forty years and in that time had made a great many friends who are left to cherish the memory of a kind and loving Christian woman.

Mrs. Hayes was born in Hartford, Conn. She was born in the state arsenal in her home town, a fact quite uncommon. She lived with her parents for some time in the city of her birth, and there received her early training. She came west with her folks, settling in Chicago, coming to that city in 1837. She was married and care to Iowa nearly fifty years ago, settling in Black Hawk County. A few years later she went with her husband to Clinton, where she resided, returning to this city in 1849, where she has since been a resident.

She is survived by four children, three daughters and one son. They are: Fred S.; Mrs. Frank Rath; Mrs. L. G. Adams, all of Waterloo; and Mrs. Sprague, who is at present residing in a western city. Mrs. Sprague will not attend the funeral.

Early in life Mrs. Hayes became a member of the Methodist church and has ever since tried to live as she thought her Master would have her. She was at the time of her death a prominent member of Grace M. E. Church of this city.

Funeral arrangements have not as yet been made, but it is thought that they will be held Saturday afternoon. They will be in charge of Rev. Bissell.
