WATERLOO - Eugene "Gene" Enderlein, 95, of Waterloo, died at home Monday, March 17, 2014.

He was born Oct. 12, 1918, in Waterloo, son of Albert and Luella Emerson Enderlein. He married Mary H. Weston on June 30, 1943, in Waterloo; she died Feb. 11, 1981. He married Ann Felcher in February 1983 in Waterloo.

Gene graduated from Waterloo West High School in 1936, attended the University of Northern Iowa, Cedar Falls, and received a bachelor's degree in retail management from Northwestern University in 1940. He joined his father in 1940 at Enderlein Clothiers, which was founded in 1917, and owned this store, The Britchery and JW McHollister's, retiring in 1985. He was a member of First Congregational Church and served on the board of trustees; was a member of Waterloo Downtown Rotary Club, Kiwanis Club, Waterloo Downtown Retail Council; was a board member of Waterloo Civic Foundation; was past president of United Way and of chairman of the Service Corps of Retired Executives (SCORE) and of the Waterloo Civil Rights Commission.

Survived by his wife; a daughter, Deb (Steve) Pultorak of Marshalltown; a stepson, Tom (Leah) Felcher of Atlanta; two stepdaughters, Margy (Jim) Titus of Sonoma, Calif., and Mindy Ramsey of Salt Lake City; six grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.

Preceded in death by his parents; a son, Rik; and a sister, Olivia.

Memorial services: 11 a.m. Friday at Memorial Chapel in Waterloo Memorial Park Cemetery, preceded by burial in the cemetery. Visitation from 4 to 6 p.m. Thursday at Locke Funeral Home.
