WATERLOO - Russell J. Anderson, 84, of Independence, formerly of Waterloo, died Friday, July 18, 2008, at home.

He was born March 7, 1924, in Waterloo, son of James Dewey and Beulah Dorcas Cutshall Anderson. He married Kay Dausener on Jan. 18, 1943, in Waterloo.

Mr. Anderson graduated from Waterloo East High School in 1942 and attended Iowa State Teachers College, Cedar Falls. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II as a torpedo man, third class, and was employed as an engineer for the Illinois Central Railroad for 38 years, retiring April 15, 1983.

Survived by his wife; a son, Scott (Joyce) of Brandon; a daughter, Judi (Dean) Christensen of Joshua, Texas; 12 grandchildren, Thomas, James, Chris, Tim (Cathy), Travis (Cerrita), Nick, Pam and Amee Anderson, Karen (Jeremy) Nichol, Kym (Shawn) McCann, Melissa (Jeremy) Branham and Scott (Shonda) Christensen; 21 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Norma Behrens of Bentonville, Ark., and Donna Scott of Waterloo; and a brother, Ralph (Eleanor) of Tallahassee, Fla.

Preceded in death by a son, Ted.

Services: 7 p.m. Tuesday at Hagarty-Waychoff-Grarup Funeral Service on South Street, with private burial services on Wednesday at Mount Olivet Cemetery. Full military rites will be conducted by American Legion Post 138 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1623. Public visitation from 2 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

Memorials may be directed to Cedar Valley Hospice.
