WATERLOO - John R. Clendenen, 61, of Waterloo, died at home Monday, Aug. 4, 2008, after a brief illness.

He was born May 1, 1947, in Oelwein, son of Fred and Claribel Roepke Clendenen. He married Marilyn Hufford, and they later divorced. He married Charlotte Laymon on July 28, 1984, at Zion Lutheran Church, Oelwein.

Mr. Clendenen had been employed with Occo Feed and was a self-employed landscaping contractor.

Survived by his wife; two sons, Brad of Russeville, Ark., and Jason of Fayetteville, N.C.; a stepson, Jeff (Cindy) Laymon of Southhold, N.Y.; two daughters, Renee Felts of Phoenix and Jennifer (Bryan) Hite of Nixa, Mo.; eight grandchildren; two brothers, Ray (Chris) of Cedar Rapids and Richard (Karen) of Oelwein; and two sisters, Marlys (Vince) Tookey of Eagle Grove and Sherri (Gary) Zingg of Otterville.

Preceded in death by his parents; and a brother, Phil.

Services: 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Hagarty-Waychoff-Grarup Funeral Service on West Ridgeway, Waterloo, with burial in Woodlawn Cemetery, Oelwein. Public visitation from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday and for an hour before services Thursday at the funeral home.

Memorials may be directed to Cedar Valley Hospice in lieu of flowers.
