INDEPENDENCE - Robert H. Downing, 81, of Independence, died Saturday, March 8, 2014, at the Cedar Valley Hospice Home, Waterloo.

He was born Aug. 27, 1932, in Black Hawk County, son of George Powell and Bernice Arlene Schrader Downing. On Feb. 22, 1951, he married Shirley Ann Brown in Independence, and they later divorced.

Robert was a John Deere tractor mechanic at Cannon Implement, Rowley, retiring in 1987.

Survived by four daughters, Gwen Decker of Independence, Sandy Downing of Cedar Rapids, Linda (Mark) Main of Missouri City, Texas, and Susie (Donny) Bearbower of Jesup; two sons, Robert T. of Center Point and Jeff (Shannon) of Muscatine; six grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; five brothers, Clifford (Marian) of Moberly, Mo., Gene (Shirley) of Warrenton, Mo., David (Lila) of Higbee, Mo., Jim (Kay) of Hillsboro, Mo., and Roger (Jan) of La Crosse, Wash.; and three sisters, Betty Sherrets of Independence, Marian Rice of Moberly and Donna (Richard) Glynn of Waterloo.

Preceded in death by his parents.

Visitation: 3 to 7 p.m. today at White Funeral Home, Independence. His cremains will be placed in Cremation Garden at Mount Hope Cemetery, Independence.
