WATERLOO - Ronald J. Schares, 79, of Waterloo, died at home Monday, March 10, 2014.

He was born Nov. 5, 1934, in Gilbertville, son of Joseph and Mary Welter Schares. He married Genevieve Shafer on Jan. 14, 1956, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Raymond.

Ronald was employed with Rath Packing Co. for 35 years until it closed in 1984.

Survived by his wife; two sons, Timothy Scott (Shanel) and Thomas Patrick, both of Waterloo; three daughters, Genevieve Marie (Edward) Vetternack and Victoria Sue (Charles) Sero, both of Waterloo, and Cheryl Kay (Jeff) Ott of Dunkerton; 17 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; three brothers, Marvin (Nancy) and Lester (Marge), both of Gilbertville, and Henry (Delores) of Washburn; and two sisters, Marcella McCardle of Independence and Marie (Gene) Hestness of Mason City.

Preceded in death by two sons, Ronald John and John Joseph; a great-grandson, Mitch Scott Baruth; and four brothers, Norman, Harry, Elmer and Earl.

Services: 10 a.m. Friday at Queen of Peace Catholic Church, with burial in Fairview Cemetery. Visitation from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Hagarty-Waychoff-Grarup Funeral Service on West Ridgeway, with a 4 p.m. Legion of Mary rosary. Visitation also an hour before services Friday at the church.

Ronald enjoyed all his grandchildren. He loved watching his Cubs baseball, but sometimes he would get so frustrated, he would watch them from outside, through the window. Lol - “Go Cubs Go!”
