WATERLOO - Richard Ausbin Root, 72, of Waterloo, died Sunday, May 29, 2005 at his home.

Richard was born Feb. 14, 1933 in Eagle Grove, Iowa, the son of Arthur and Ruth Grandgeorge Root. He graduated from East High School in 1951. He served in the U.S. Naval Reserves.

Richard worked at Chamberlain Manufacturing Corporation in the Research and Development Department. for 39 years.

He married Elinor Gapinski June 25, 1953, at St. Johns Catholic Church, Waterloo. They had six children, Steven Root, Terry (Amy) Root of Waterloo, Susan Root of Faribault, Minn., Jane (David) Smith of Slinger, Wis., Michael (Heidi) Root of Park City, Utah, and Sandra Root, deceased; 13 grandchildren and two great-granddaughters; also two brothers, the Rev. Leonard (Helen) Root of Mason City and Lynal Root, deceased; and two sisters, Jolene (Kenneth) Burr of Phoenix, Ariz., and Jacklene Root, deceased.

Services will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, with burial in Mount Olivet Cemetery. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Hagarty-Waychoff-Grarup Funeral Service on West Ridgeway, where there will be a 7 p.m. vigil service. There will be no visitation at the church.

Memorials may be made to Sacred Heart Catholic Church or American Heart Association.
