Mark Harper, 60, of Buffalo, Minn., (formerly of Cedar Falls) died Sunday, May 15, 2005, while out walking his dog. Funeral services were held on Thursday, May 19, at the Church of St. Francis in Buffalo.

Mark Harper was born on April 26, 1945, in Waterloo, the son of Paul and Wilma (Michael) Harper. He grew up in Cedar Falls and graduated from Cedar Falls High School in 1963. He continued his education at the University of Northern Iowa and received a bachelor's degree in social studies/economics. He then taught social studies at Holmes Junior High School until he was drafted into the Army. He served in the Army from 1969 to 1971, including a tour of duty in Vietnam.

He was united in marriage to Nancy Daeges on Nov. 22, 1969, and the couple made their home in Bloomington, Minn., at the end of his tour of duty. At that time, Mark continued his education and worked as a learning disability teacher from 1972-1975 at North St. Paul/Maplewood Schools. He then served as a Coordinator for Special Education programs for Wright, Northern Sherburne, and Meeker counties in Minnesota.

He next took a position as principal at Storden/Jeffers Junior-Senior High from 1984-1985. In 1985, he began working as an assistant principal at Northfield High School, where he worked until 1989. He held a position as principal of Litchfield Middle School from 1989-1995.

Education was very important to Mark. He was a graduate of the Bush Principals Program at the University of Minnesota, where he received a master#'s degree. He also received a specialist equivalent degree from St. Cloud State.

Mark enjoyed reading, doing genealogical research and watching football. He also enjoyed working with people; so, following his career in education, he went to work in auto sales and was currently employed at Morries Ford in Buffalo.

He was a member of the Buffalo American Legion, a former member of the Monticello, Minn., Lions, and a member of St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church.

Survivors include his wife, Nancy, of Buffalo; daughter, Sarah of Minneapolis; son, Joe of Bloomington, Minn.; mother, Wilma of Cedar Falls; brother, Tim (Beverly) Harper of Cherryvale, Kan.; sister, Cindy Kruckeberg of Cedar Falls; and nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father.
