CEDAR FALLS - Alvin L. Thompson, 84, of Cedar Falls, died Monday, May 30, 2005, at Allen Hospital from complications of diabetes.

He was born June 8, 1920, in Melfort, Saskatchewan, Canada, son of Ole and Clarice Ledger Thompson. He married Vera Weidman on Aug. 22, 1941, in Waterloo.

Mr. Thompson was retired from Sheet Metals Local 45. He was a veteran of World War II, serving as a tank commander in Pattons Third Army. He earned the Bronze Star and a Purple Heart.

Survivors include his wife; five sons, Tom (Shirley), Leonard (Roxanne) and George (Darlene), all of Janesville, Bill (Sue) and Rory (Debbie), both of Shell Rock; four daughters, Suzzann (Tom) Bussey of Nashua, Sally (Jim) Yuhouse of Harpers Ferry, Sherry (David) Moehlis of Waverly and Sara (Kenny) Kofron of Janesville; 24 grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren and a great-great-grandchild; and two brothers, Kenneth (Doris) of Solon and Jack (Judy) of Waterloo.

Preceded in death by his parents; three sisters, Minnie, Leona and Lela; a son-in-law, Bobby Wright; and a daughter-in-law, Vicki Thompson.

Services: 10 a.m. Thursday at Garden View Chapel, Waterloo, with burial in Cedar Valley Memorial Gardens, rural Cedar Falls. Graveside military rites will be conducted by Cedar Falls AMVETS Post 49. Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. today and for an hour before services at the chapel.
