Donald E. Gates, 75, of Jesup, died Tuesday, Feb. 28, 2006, at Allen Hospital, Waterloo, following a brief illness.

He was born March 24, 1930, near Walker, son of Emmett Lee Gates and Mabel Mae Cannon Gates. He married Vivian Ione Van Etten Oct. 11, 1950, at St. John's Catholic Church, Independence.

He graduated from Hazleton High School in 1947 and then began farming with his father. He then worked at Greenley Elevator, Independence, and later farmed and also worked for Construction Machinery Co.

Mr. Gates worked at Hinson Manufacturing until transferring to John Deere [Waterloo] where he worked for more than 26 years, retiring in December 1998.

Survived by his wife; four daughters, Peggy (Thomas) Short and Beverly (John) Tuve, both of Parkersburg, Juanita (Rodney) Eliasen of Cedar Falls and Cheryl (David) Mills of Portage, Mich.; 12 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and a sister, Anna Mae (Maurice "Tex") Pentecost of Independence.

Preceded in death by a sister, Mary Darlene Erger.

Services: 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Athanasius Catholic Church, Jesup, with burial in Mount Hope Cemetery, Independence. Public visitation after 7 p.m. today and after 2 p.m. Friday at White Funeral Home, Jesup, where there will be a Knights of Columbus rosary at 7:30 p.m. today and a 3 p.m. parish rosary and a 7 p.m. vigil service, both on Friday.

Memorials may be directed to the church or Mended Hearts in Waterloo.
