CEDAR FALLS -- Lyda C. Belthuis, 101, of Cedar Falls, died Friday, Feb. 14, 2014, at Western Home Communities.

She was born May 29, 1912, in Butler County, Parkersburg, daughter of Albert W. and Aletta Theerman Bulthuis.

Lyda graduated from Parkersburg High School in 1934; received her bachelor's degree from Iowa State Teachers College in 1939; her master's degree from the University of Northern Colorado in 1944; and her Ph.D. from the University of Michigan in 1947. She was professor of geography at University of Minnesota, Duluth, for 30 years, serving as department head from 1955 to 1965. She had 50 publications. She was a member of the Pilgrim Congregational Church, Duluth, and attended the Western Home Chapel for the last 20 years.

Survived by two nieces, Midred Goodell of Waterloo and Inez (Ed) McCarville of Dike; and a niece by marriage, Adele Pruin of Holland.

Preceded in death by two sisters, Gertie Bouck and Grace Pruin; a brother, Ed Bulthuis; and two nephews, Bert and Harry Pruin.

Services: 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Western Home Chapel, Cedar Falls, with burial in Stout Cemetery, Stout. Visitation from 9:30 to 10:15 a.m. Wednesday at the Western Home. Redman-Schwartz Funeral Home, Parkersburg, is in charge of the arrangements.
