EVANSDALE - LaVerne H. Johnson, 81, formerly of Evansdale, died Jan. 29, 2014, in Walla Walla, Wash.

He was born March 7, 1933, in Alpha, son of Harvey and Leona Johnson. He married Evelyn Mae Melick on June 12, 1953, in Waterloo.

LaVerne graduated from Waterloo East High School, and then spent 10 years in the U.S. military intelligence. He moved to Walla Walla and managed a Kentucky Fried Chicken and then owned Fryer Tuck Restaurant. He retired in 1989 as supervising custodian engineer for his church.

Survived by his wife; four daughters, Cindy, Nancy, Michelle, Brenda and spouses; two sons, Larry, Wayne and spouses; 20 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Eileen and Judy.

Preceded in death by: his parents; a brother, John; two sisters, Bonnie and Jan; and a granddaughter, Haleigh.

Memorial services: were Feb. 3 at his church in Walla Walla.

LaVerne loved people. He was an instant friend to all he met. He spent much of his life in the service of youth.
