WATERLOO -- Ret. Tsgt Michael "Spuds" F. Melendy, 63, of Mason City, formerly of Waterloo, died at home Monday, Feb. 17, 2014.

He was born Feb. 24, 1950, in Black Hawk County, son of Edwin Le Reine and Esther Ann Hinrichs Melendy. On June 21, 1975, he married Ramona Stock at Salem Evangelical United Brethren Church and they later separated.

Spuds graduated from Waterloo West High School in 1969. He served in the U.S. Navy and then was transferred to the U.S. National Guard until retiring in 2000. He worked at Waterloo Industries from 1972 until their closure in 1997.

Survived by three daughters, Deidre Easton, Bethany (Mohammad Ghnem) Melendy and Melissa Vincent; and four grandchildren.

Services: 2 p.m. Saturday at Hogan Bremer Moore Colonial Chapel, Mason City, where visitation begins at noon. Military graveside services 2 p.m. Monday at the Iowa Veteran Cemetery, Adel.
