WATERLOO -- Walter Franklin, 93, of Waterloo, died Saturday, Feb. 15, 2014, at Covenant Medical Center.

He was born July 30, 1920, in Goodrich, N.D., son of Jackson and Helen Hirsch Franklin. He married Edna Heimbuch on Aug. 30, 1941, in Waterloo.

Walter served in the U.S. Navy aboard the USS Card Aircraft Carrier in both the Atlantic and Pacific fronts during World War II. He was employed at Rath Packing Co. for 35 years, retiring in 1980.

Survived by his wife of Cedar Falls; a son, Clyde (Rita Young) of Waterloo; three daughters, Kathy Harper of Holmen, Wis., Barbara (Tom) Graves of Waterloo and Janet (Tom) Fowler of Sedro-Woolley, Wash.; nine grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren.

Preceded in death by three brothers, Benny, Carl and Sterling; and a sister, Lydia Jensen.

Services: 1 p.m. Thursday at Hagarty-Waychoff-Grarup Funeral Service on West Ridgeway, with burial in Garden of Memories Cemetery. Full military rites will be conducted by Waterloo AMVETS Post 19 and Evansdale AMVETS Post 31. Visitation from 11 a.m. until services Thursday at the funeral home.
