Mabel M. Zobel was born on Jan. 14, 1907, south of La Porte City on a farm; the daughter of Thomas W. and Anna (Kaiser) Elliott. She attended country school and graduated from La Porte City High School with the class of 1924. She continued her education with Normal School training and taught country school for a time.

On Oct. 29, 1927, Mabel was united in marriage to Harold Zobel in Waverly, Iowa.hey lived briefly in the 1930s in North Dakota, but most of their married life was spent in Benton and Buchanan counties on their dairy farms. Mabel worked her life as a homemaker and raising he family.

In 1967, they moved off the farm and resided in Vinton. Mabel worked as a cook at Iowa Braille School and then as cook at the Virginia Gay Hospital. She was known for her expertise in baking, especially wedding cakes, homemade noodles and bread. Harold passed away on March 1, 1998 and Mabel continued to live at their home.

On Sept. 14, 1999, she became a resident at the Colonial Manor Care Center in La Porte City where Mabel suffered a severe stroke this past week and was taken to Covenant Medical Center in Waterloo, where her death came on Thursday, April 20, 2000, at the age of 93 years.

She was a member of Stewart Memorial United Methodist Church and the United Methodist Women in Vinton. Aside from cooking in her spare time, Mabel enjoyed making rugs, gardening, canning and working with flowers.

She is preceded in death by her parents, husband Harold, a son, Gene Zobel; four brothers: George, Harold, Don and Elvin Elliott; three sons, Walter (Virginia) of Wayzata, Minn, Robert (Dorothy) of Van Horne and Richard (Kaylene) of Grinnell, a daughter, Patricia (Lyle) Seebach of Cresco, two brothers, Tom W. (Virginia) Elliott Jr. of Liberty, Mo., Merle (Grace) Elliott of Waterloo, IA; three sisters, Charlotte Elliott, Elizabeth Niemeyer and Marjorie (Burdette) Rausch, all of La Porte City, 11 grandchildren and 19 great grandchildren.

Services will be Tuesday, April 25, 2000, at 11 a.m. at the Stewat Memorial United Methodist Church, Vinton, with the Rev Jan Ziskovsky officiating. Burial will be at 1:30 p.m. in Westview Cemetery, La Porte City.
