WATERLOO - Gerald W. "Chief" Schons, 87, of Waterloo, died Friday, June 24, 2005, at Friendship Village Medical Center of natural causes.

He was born Dec. 17, 1917, in Black Hawk County, son of Peter and Mary Bovy Schons. He married Marlys Hasbrouk in October 1944. She died in 1959. He married Elena Olson in October 1963 in Eagle Center. She died May 18, 2002.

Mr. Schons owned and operated a custom corn shelling business for 30 years and farmed in the Eagle Center area for 55 years.

Survivors include three sons, Gary of Windom, Minn., Dick (Marilyn) of Waterloo and Gary ( Nancy) Olson of La Porte City; four daughters, Diane (Jim) Christopher of Waterloo, Jan (Ron) Peeler of Bowling Green, Ky., Annette (Steve) Thompson of Simi Valley, Calif., and Leslie Breakenridge of Hudson; 16 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren.

Preceded in death by a daughter, Connie Olson; a brother, Bernard; and two sisters, Clara Staebell and Cecelia Mullen.

Services: 10 a.m. Monday at St. Edwards Catholic Church, Waterloo, with burial in St. Marys of Mount Carmel cemetery, Eagle Center. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Hagarty-Waychoff-Grarup Funeral Service on West Ridgeway, where there will be a 7 p.m. vigil. Visitation also for an hour before services Monday at the church.
