Funeral services for former Waterloo resident Hartness D. Taylor, 83, of Mexico, Mo., will be 2 p.m. Saturday at the Mason Hall Funeral Home in Independence. Burial, will be in Mount Hope Cemetery in Independence.

Mr. Taylor died Wednesday at the Audrian Medical Center in Mexico, Mo., after a long illness.

Born July 16, 1891, in Greene, he was the son of the Rev. T. E. and Nellie Huie Taylor. He married Lois E. Wells in 1947 in Independence. A graduate of Independence High School and Upper Iowa University, he received his law degree from Mitchell College in St. Paul, Minn, in 1917.

An athlete in both high school and college, Mr. Taylor served as coach and principal at several schools prior to moving to Waterloo in 1926 where he served as principal of East Junior High School and Logan Junior High School. He retired from the Waterloo schools in 1956 and resided in Mexico, Mo. the past five years.

Survivors include two sons, Thomas J. of Mexico, Mo., and Gordon S. of Moline, Ill.; a daughter, Mrs. Virgina Davis of Deerfield, Ill.; and a brother, Karl of Gardnerville; Nev.

Friends may call at the funeral home Friday from 7 to 9 p.m. A Masonic service will be conducted at the funeral home.

The family suggests that memorials be given to the Methodist Church of Independence where Mr. Taylor's father served as minister for 20 years.
