WATERLOO - Dean A. Diestelmeier, 76, of Waterloo, died Sunday, May 22, 2005, at Covenant Medical Center.

He was born Sept. 5, 1928, in Waterloo, son of George and Laura Mae Hurd Diestelmeier. He married Carol Raulston on May 29, 1970, and they later divorced.

Mr. Diestelmeier graduated from Waterloo East High School in 1946 and later attended Iowa State Teachers College, Cedar Falls. He worked for the Illinois Central Gulf Railroad and Chicago Pacific Railroad for 50 years as a locomotive engineer, retiring in 1995. He was a sergeant during the Korean War in the U.S. Army. He was a member of Waterloo First United Methodist Church, Masonic Lodge No. 105 and Fraternal Order Eagles.

Dean has left an enduring legacy to his family and a multitude of friends that span the country in his grace, dignity, strength and dry wit. He was known for his kindness and appreciated for his sense of humor. Dean was always "en route" to somewhere. He valued his independence and his truck. Whether it was a trip to Wendys to buy Coco a snack or his annual journey to Texas for the winter, Dean was always on the go. He loved spending time with his family, fishing from his boat, watching the south Texas sunset and keeping current with all the latest gossip. He was truly a wonderful spirited man and touched the souls of all he knew.

Survivors include two daughters, Donna (Clay) Lanier of Houston, Texas, and Deana (Wiley) Erwin of Schertz, Texas; five grandchildren, Robert Clayton Lanier III, Carlton Thomas Lanier, Scarlett Elizabeth Erwin, George Cowen Erwin and Morgan Isabella Erwin; a sister-in-law, Margaret Diestelmeier of Waterloo; and beloved companion, Coco.

Preceded in death by his parents; and a brother, George.
