WATERLOO -- Richard L. “Dick” Comito, 74, of Waterloo, died Sunday, Jan. 5, 2014, at the Cedar Valley Hospice Home.

He was born Feb. 11, 1939, in Des Moines, son of Frank M. and Rose Marie Greco Comito. He married Margaret Ann “Midge” Miller on Feb. 6, 1960, at Holy Trinity Church, Des Moines.

Mr. Comito graduated from Drake University Pharmacy School and owned and operated Hurdle Drug from 1966 to 1989. He served in the U.S. Navy and was an Iowa state senator from 1978 to 1982.

Survived by his wife; a son, Richard Le II (Cynthia “Cindy”) of Los Angeles; four daughters, Ellen Marie (David) McKeown, Juanita Ann (Terry) Doughty and Rachell Le “Shelly” (Dean) Sturch, all of Waterloo, and Carmela Star (Jeff) Guthart of Alice Springs, Australia; an exchange student daughter, Gloria Maria Sabando Garcia of Ecuador; nine grandchildren, Amanda Margaret (David) Kline, John Reed (Tiffany) Doughty, Elizabeth Ann Doughty, Alexandra Kay Guthart, Victoria Lynn Guthart, Samantha LeAnn Sturch, Bridget Marie Sturch, Nicholas Le Comito and Gabriel Linn Comito; and three great-grandchildren, Andrew David, Nathanael James and Simon Daniel Kline.

Preceded in death by two brothers, Robert Frank and William Joseph.

Services: 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, with burial in Waterloo Cemetery. Visitation from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Hagarty-Waychoff-Grarup Funeral Service on West Ridgeway, with a 4 p.m. rosary and a 7 p.m. vigil. Visitation also an hour before services Thursday at the church.

Memorials may be directed to the church or Cedar Valley Hospice.
