James William "Jim" Youngblut, 78, of 5211 E. Washburn Road, died Thursday, Nov. 9, 2000, at Covenant Medical Center of a heart attack.

He was born March 5, 1922, in Gilbertville, son of George and Rose Schares Youngblut. He married Margie Wermerskirchen on Dec. 24, 1943, in Houston.

Mr. Youngblut was the founder and president of Youngblut Contracting for more than 40 years. He served as a first lieutenant in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II and was a charter member and past commander of American Legion Post 714 of Gilbertville. He was a charter member of the Izaac Walton League of Waterloo and was past president of the Don Bosco School Board.

Survived by his wife; five daughters, Kathy Manatt, Peggy Youngblut and Becky Bertch, all of Waterloo, Nancy Youngblut of Pasadena, Calif., and Mary Beth Youngblut of Northfield, Minn.; a son, Jim J. of Minneapolis; 11 grandchildren; and a brother, Ray of Washburn.

Preceded in death by a son, Richard Alan; and two brothers, Norman and Jack.

Services: 11 a.m. Saturday at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Gilbertville, with burial in the church cemetery. Full military rites will be conducted by Nugent Demuth American Legion Post 714 of Gilbertville. Friends may call from 3 to 8 p.m. today at Hagarty-Waychoff-Grarup Funeral Service on South Street, where there will be a 3 p.m. rosary, a 6 p.m. Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus rosary and a 7 p.m. vigil service. Visitation also for an hour before services Saturday at the church.

Memorials may be directed to the church, Don Bosco High School or American Cancer Society.
