Richard Waite "Dick" Smith, 77, of Cedar Falls, died Saturday, Nov. 11, 2000, at the Cedar Falls Western Home Martin Center of cancer.

He was born Nov. 23, 1922, in Cedar Falls, son of John Lester and Esther Waite Smith. He married Marilyn Hoffer on July 31, 1943, in Rantoul, Ill.

Mr. Smith attended Iowa State Teachers College (UNI) and Iowa State College (Iowa State University), graduating with an industrial engineering degree in 1949. He received his professional engineering license in the state of Iowa, and was manager of the Manufacturing Engineering Department at Viking Pump Co., retiring in 1985 after 37 years of service. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps.

He was chairman of the Central Iowa Section of the Mechanical Engineering Society; chairman of the Industrial Development Committee of the Cedar Falls Chamber of Commerce; chairman of the AMVETS Board; a founding member of "The Saints" Dixieland Band; and was co-founder of the Sturgis Falls Dixieland Jazz Festival, managing it for 11 years.

Survived by his wife; two sons, Michael John of Sartell, Minn., and David Waite of Allison; a daughter, Lore Ann Mick of Waverly; nine grandchildren; and a sister, E. Jean Finnell of Pueblo, Colo.

Memorial services: 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Patrick Catholic Church, with private inurnment at Greenwood Cemetery. Military rites will be conducted by Cedar Falls AMVETS Post 49. A vigil service will be conducted at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Dahl-Van Hove-Schoof Funeral Home. There will be no visitation; his body was cremated.

Memorials may be directed to Cedar Valley Hospice or St. Patrick Catholic Church.
