INDEPENDENCE — Gary L. Bird, 66, of Independence, died Tuesday, Dec. 4, 2012, at Cedar Valley Hospice Home, Waterloo, from complications of ALS.

He was born Feb. 13, 1946, in Independence, son of Gilbert R. and Marian Williamson Bird. He married Carolyn J. McCampbell on Dec. 28, 1968, at St. Timothy’s Methodist Church, Cedar Falls.

Mr. Bird graduated from Waterloo West High School in 1964. He was employed with Kings Food Host prior to entering the U.S. Army during the Vietnam Conflict. He later went to work at Wicks Lumber Co. for a couple of years prior to working at John Deere Waterloo Tractor Works for 33 years, retiring in 2007.

Survived by his wife; two sons, Randy (Krista) of Lake in the Hills, Ill., and Erik (Julie) of Bloomsdale, Mo.; a daughter, Angie Buss of Waterloo; 11 grandchildren; his father of Waterloo; and two sisters, Jacque (Gary) Hauser of Tama and Karen (Al Hintz) Towlerton of Denver.

Preceded in death by his mother.

Services: 11 a.m. Saturday at First United Methodist Church, Independence. Visitation from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at Reiff Funeral Home & Crematory, Independence, with a 7 p.m. military memorial service.
