CEDAR FALLS — The Rev. Thomas Ree Balm, 80, of Garner, formerly of Cedar Falls, died at his home Thursday, Nov. 29, 2012.

He was born Aug. 14, 1932, in Fort Dodge, son of Thomas T. and Ivadel Balm. He married Darline Miller in 1954. He then married Marilyn Wilson in 1987.

He graduated from Fort Dodge High School and attended Westmar College in LeMars. He attended seminary and served United Methodist churches in Bolan, Lansing, Dysart, LeMars, Cedar Falls, Estherville, Davenport and Eldora.

Survived by his wife, Marilyn; his former wife, Darline Balm-Demmel of Cedar Falls; three sons, Stephen (Sara) of Spirit Lake, Jonathon (Angie Story) of Brooklyn and Brian (Nancy) of Omaha, Neb.; a daughter, Michelle Balm of Jesup; a stepdaughter, Kathy Janssen of Mason City; a stepson, David Alsvig of Boerne, Texas; 15 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

Preceded in death by a sister, Sally Dempsey; a brother, Jerry; and a granddaughter, Aubrey Oliver.

Memorial services: 1 p.m Monday at United Methodist Church, Garner. Visitation from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. today at the church. Cataldo Funeral Home, Garner, is in charge of arrangements.

Memorials may be directed to Hospice of North Iowa.

Tom had a knack for finding humor in life. From his college antics to his unique Christmas letters, Tom marched to the beat of a different drummer. In 2001 Tom and Marilyn started spending their winters in Florida.
