Alice M. Christensen Carrigg

Born almost 100 years ago on May 27, 1911, Alice passed away peacefully at Friendship Village, a place she enjoyed and called home for nearly 30 years. She was born in Waterloo to Phillip E. and Lucy Fenstermaker Miller. The youngest of three children, sister Eva and brother Joe, all enjoyed being a part of their father's restaurant. Alice was the "apple of her father's eye" until his early death in 1918. Later, Alice and her mother spent a brief time in Florida where she graduated from Seabreeze Daytona Beach High School. She returned to Waterloo and attended Gates Business College. During that same time, she met and married Carl Christensen on Feb. 10, 1929. They had two children, Burton and Joy. In 1973, Carl passed away.

Alice is survived by her son, Burton (Judy); granddaughter Marla (Kerry) Kohler; great-grandchildren Megan and Shea; and granddaughter Kacey (Rich) Sharrett; and great-grandson Max. Also survived by daughter Joy Ruxlow and granddaughter Nancy Ruxlow.

Alice married Leo Carrigg on Feb. 6, 1976. They enjoyed golfing and traveling together. Leo and Alice moved into Friendship Village in 1982, where they met many new friends. She and Leo delivered Meals on Wheels, and Alice volunteered in the Village Med Center. She was a lifetime member of the Congregational Church, member of the Elklets, Waterloo Chamber of Commerce and a life member of the Friendship Village Auxiliary. After Leo died, Alice took part in many of the Village's trips and cruises throughout the world. These were highlights that she enjoyed so much.

Alice is also survived by Leo's daughter, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; daughter Marian (David) Greene; grandchildren Karen (Tom) Farmer, Marsha (Tim) Lind, Paul (Gina) Greene; great-grandchildren Paul (Melinda) Farmer, Catherine (Jesse) White, Ben Lind, Sam Lind, Max (Miranda) Lind, Lucas Greene, Molly (Brian) Bishop and Tyler Greene; and great-great-grandchildren Braeden and Nolan Farmer and Elise and Andrew White.

Leo's daughter Carolyn Buckton (deceased); grandsons Kent (Barb) Buckton and Todd (Jean) Buckton; and great-grandchildren Katelyn and Nick Buckton and Elizabeth and Julia Buckton.

Alice will be lovingly remembered by her special smile and will be missed by all.

Memorial services will be held at Friendship Village Chapel at 11 a.m. Wednesday, April 20. Memorials should be directed to Friendship Village Auxiliary or Alzheimer's Association. Family burial in Garden of Memories Cemetery precedes services.
