[Waterloo-Cedar Falls Courier, Wednesday, December 25, 2013]

Charlotte Mary (Jones) Mack, 88, passed away peacefully in her home on Dec. 23, 2013, after a courageous and gracious battle with Alzheimer’s disease. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Dec. 27, at St. Edward’s Catholic Church, Waterloo, with burial to follow at Mount Olivet Cemetery. The family will receive visitors from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Dec 26, at Hagarty-Waychoff-Grarup Funeral Service on West Ridgeway, where there will be a vigil service beginning at 7 p.m.

Charlotte, daughter of Osborn Edward and Honora Dunn Jones, was born March 8, 1925, in Williamsburg. Her great-grandfather, Richard Williams, was the founder of Williamsburg. Charlotte was the third daughter in a family of four sons and four daughters. She graduated from Clarke College and taught high school before working briefly at John Deere Dubuque Tractor Works. It was there she met the love of her life, and husband of 64 years, Michael J. Mack Sr. After their early years in Dubuque, Charlotte, Mike, and their young family moved to Waterloo in 1956, and have been active members of the Waterloo community ever since.

Charlotte’s blend of Welsh and Irish roots gave her an eye for a great book, an ear for wonderful music, and a heart as big as her family. And, you could always count on her sly wit and sense of humor. But it was her smile that would melt your heart. First and foremost, she was a mother, and the glue that bound her large family. As a daughter of a banker who survived the Great Depression, she capably managed a household of 10 with skills that would be the envy of any CEO. It was her kind nature, however, and love of people –- especially children -- for which she will long be remembered.

Charlotte is survived by her husband, Michael J. Mack Sr. of Waterloo, and her eight children, Kathleen (Dale) Wolf of Ottawa, Ill., Carol (William) Manzel of Dubuque, Patrick (Sara) Mack of Des Moines, Michele (William) Haefele of Overland Park, Kan., Michael J. Mack Jr. (Denise) of Bettendorf, Marybeth Mack of Olathe, Kan., Christine Mack of St. Paul, Minn., and Timothy (Kris) Mack of Waterloo. She was also blessed with 16 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. Charlotte is also survived by her sister, Honore Steimel of Charles City, and many nieces and nephews.

She is preceded in death by her parents, her four brothers, and two sisters.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to Cedar Valley Hospice in Charlotte’s honor.
