Mark Anthony Hogan, 85, of Independence, died at home Friday, Dec. 13.

He was born Dec. 2, 1929, son of Mark Sr. and Florence Gallery Hogan. He married Nadine L. Kearns on April 7, 1952, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Waterloo. She died Dec. 8, 2010.

He graduated from Winthrop Consolidated High School and then entered the service until 1953. Mr. Hogan worked at Rath Packing in Waterloo for nearly 30 years. He also farmed full-time east of Winthrop.

Survived by his nine children, Joan (Dennis) Sommerfelt of Walker, Carol (Mike) Williams of Merrill, Mark (Jackie) Hogan and Dean (Sue) Hogan, both of Independence, Robin Kress of Quasqueton, Christine (Stewart) Bagley of Independence, Pat Hogan of Mediapolis, Michelle O’Brien and Mellissa (Kevin) Bergom, both of Belle Plaine; 22 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; a brother, John C. (Margaret) of Winthrop; and a sister-in-law, Lucille Hogan of Winthrop.

Preceded in death by his parents; two sons-in-law, Ronnie Kress and Donald O'Brien; three brothers, Cyril, Eugene and Francis; and three sisters, LaVaughn Deegan, Mary Lindsay and Colletta Boding.

Services: 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, with burial in the church cemetery, both in Winthrop, with military rites. Visitation will be from 3 to 7 p.m. Monday, with a 7:30 p.m. Scripture service, and until 10 a.m. Tuesday at Fawcett Funeral Home, Winthrop.

He was an avid card player and always enjoyed socializing with his family and friends.
