Lava L. Eastman, 81, of Plainfield, Iowa passed away on Friday, July 8, 2011 at the Cedar Valley Hospice Home in Waterloo after losing his battle with cancer.

Lava was born on November 19, 1929, the son of Robert and Maude (Yager) Eastman in Davenport, Iowa. He enlisted the US Army on March 12, 1947 serving with the Medical Detachment Unit during W.W. II until his discharge on August 23, 1948.

Upon returning from his military service he was employed at Carnation and later for John Deere in the foundry.

On October 23, 1953, he was united in marriage to Lois May Barnhart in Waterloo. She passed away on November 17, 1983. Lava continued to work at John Deere and on July 23, 1985, he was united in marriage to Betty L. Durnin in Waterloo. The couple made their home in Waterloo before moving to Plainfield.

Lava retired from John Deere in 1987. He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Plainfield. Lava loved music and played the guitar, harmonica and the rhythm bones. He played music at the nursing homes with his nephew, Roger. His greatest passion was helping people, he helped delivered meals on wheels and helped at the food pantry.

Survivors are his five daughters, Lynn (Thom) Neith of Goodyear, Arizona, Lana (Denny) Rolfes of Waterloo, Lorrie Eastman of Waterloo, Cathy (Tim) McGraw of Cedar Falls, and Tammy Durnin of Waterloo; son John Durnin of Deltona, Florida; 15 grandchildren; 19 great grandchildren and two brothers, Robert (Louise) Eastman of Waterloo and Paul Eastman of Flagstaff, Arizona. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wives, Lois on November 17, 1983 and Betty on June 12, 2006; 2 sons, Leslie Eastman on August 3, 1992 and Larry Eastman on September 29, 2010; three brothers, Richard and Gary Eastman and Jim Holcomb and by four sisters, Ora Krie, Edith Rich, Virginia Ryden and Clara Patten.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, July 12, 2011 at 11:00 am at the First Baptist Church in Plainfield with Pastor Shawn Geer officiating. Burial will follow in the Garden of Memories Cemetery in Waterloo.

Friends may call from 4:00 pm until 7:00 pm on Monday at the Kaiser-Corson Funeral Home in Waverly and also an hour prior to services on Tuesday at the church. Memorials may be directed to the family and online condolences for Lava may be left at www.kaisercorson.com . 319-352-1187
