WATERLOO - Berniece A. Shafer Barney, 88, of Waterloo, died Saturday, Oct. 1, 2005, at Covenant Medical Center of heart failure.

She was born Aug. 31, 1917, in Westgate, daughter of Charles and Augusta Raatz Shafer. She married Robert V. Barney on Nov. 22, 1936, in Waterloo. He died July 12, 1988.

Mrs. Barney graduated from Randalia High School in 1935 and did volunteer work for many years. She was a charter member of Project Ask (respite service), volunteered for the Red Cross Blood Bank, and was a member of the Allen Hospital Auxiliary for 33 years, serving on the Auxiliary Board for 15 years. She was the co-founder of the first Alzheimers Support Group in Waterloo in 1983, and was on the Care Review Committee for the State at Parkview Nursing and Rehab Center for several years. She was Volunteer of the Year in 1987.

Survivors include a son, Rodger R. of Waterloo; a daughter, Roxanne (Verlin) Palmer of Waterloo; seven grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren and a great-great-grandchild on the way.

Services: 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Our Saviors Lutheran Church, Waterloo, with burial in Murphy Cemetery, Westgate. Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Kearns, Huisman-Schumacher Chapel on Kimball and for an hour before services Wednesday at the church.
