Delbert F. Phillips, 79, of Jesup, died Thursday, Dec. 24, 2009, at Covenant Medical Center, Waterloo, of natural causes.

He was born Sept. 18, 1930, in Black Hawk County, near Jesup, son of Frank John Phillips and Anna Katherine Michels. On June 12, 1956, he married Beatrice Ann Moore at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Oelwein.

Mr. Phillips farmed and also worked for 35 years at Rath Packing, Waterloo, as an electrician. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War.

He was an active member of St. Athanasius Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus Council 8227 and Pump-Scheer American Legion Post #342, all in Jesup.

Survived by his wife; four daughters, Regina (Kenneth) Thiry and Marcie (Steve) Miller, both of Waterloo, Donna Simons of Fishers, Ind., and Ann (Rob) Blaser of Ankeny; three sons, Rick (Debra) of Jesup, Timothy "Tim" (Angela) of Independence and Ronnie "Ron" (Carol) of Rochester, Minn.; 14 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; a sister, Maxine (Cletus) Even of Jesup; a brother, Cletus (JoAnn) of LaPorte City; and a sister-in-law, Mathilda "Tillie" Phillips of Jesup.

Preceded in death by his parents; four brothers, Clarence (Philomena "Phillie"), Joseph, Norbert (Eva Mae) and (Elizabeth "Betty"), and Francis; and two sisters, Dorothy (Albert "Sam") Freet and Lillian (Vernon) Sommerfelt.

Services: 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. Athanasius Catholic Church, with burial in St. Athanasius Catholic Cemetery, both in Jesup. Military rites will be conducted by Pump-Scheer American Legion Post 342 of Jesup. Public visitation after 7 p.m. today at White Funeral Home, Jesup, where there will be an 8 p.m. Knights of Columbus rosary. Visitation also after 2 p.m. Monday at the funeral home, where there will be a 3 p.m. parish rosary and a 7 p.m. vigil service. Visitation also for an hour before services at the church.

Memorials may be directed to Pump-Scheer American Legion Post #342 or St. Athanasius Church and School, all in Jesup.

Delbert enjoyed spending time with his family and friends as well as volunteering throughout the community. He was also dedicated to supporting St. Athanasius Church and School. His hobbies included quilting, playing cards, golfing and gardening.
